» Bokito
Gorilla Exhibit
On the 18th of May 2007 something happened that nobody
ever could imagine: silverback Bokito jumped over the exhibit
river and wounded a visitor in the Rotterdam Zoo. Houthoff
Zoo Design managed together with the zoo’s design team
to build a 5 meter high mud bank wall (1800 square meters
of shotcrete decoration) within 5 weeks, so the gorilla family
could enjoy their new outdoor exhibit as soon as possible.
Enrichment; Termite hill Chimp using tool. Pots can be filled with primate vitamine mix and peanutbutter.

High Detail Handcarving The fast method. It takes a lot of practice and a talented crew to create a convincing rock texture out of wet concrete. Our artists have hand carved many thousands of square meters in the top zoos and aquaria all over the world.
With GFRC-rock panels (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) we can create any rock formation imaginable, made from real rock molds and coated with acid stains and acrylics washes make this type of rock museum quality.
This African indoor savanne house is a great place to to discover wildlife in there natural environment:
Nile crocs and other reptiles, small mammals, birds and fish: another typical Rotterdam Zoo project!
Thanks Rob Doolaard for the great pictures!
Basking rock situated near the public viewing window in tiger exhibit. The built-in adjustable heating inside the rock guarantees a good visibility especially during wintertime in the spacious, full planted exhibit.
